LizLightstone
Prof. Liz Lightstone completed her medical training at Cambridge University and Kings College Hospital Medical School and her renal training at the Hammersmith Hospital. She is Prof of Renal Medicine at Imperial College London. Her main research interests are in improving outcomes for patients with lupus nephritis (LN) and pregnancies in women with kidney disease. She also advocates to reduce health inequities in renal medicine, to hear the patient voice in research and support women in nephrology. Prof. Lightstone has been involved in a number of research projects and clinical trials to attempt to find better solutions to the management of conditions in her field. She pioneered steroid sparing approaches in treating lupus nephritis and also established one of the largest obstetric renal clinics in the UK as well as a dedicated pre-pregnancy counselling service for women with kidney disease. She has contributed to guidelines on best management of lupus nephritis and pregnancy for women with kidney disease. She has contributed to NICE guidance on these topics and has served on multiple pharma advisory boards regarding lupus nephritis and other glomerulonephritides. She is chair of a data monitoring committee of a global lupus nephritis trial, and is on the faculty a major ISN global initiative “Training the trainers” to improve awareness and management of pregnancy in women with kidney disease. Alongside her clinical practice, Professor Lightstone holds senior posts within Imperial College London and is now on the Council of the College; she serves or has recently served on the executive councils / steering groups of major national and international kidney charities and organisations including Kidney Research UK (Trustee and lead for health inequalities strategy), the International Society of Nephrology (on ExCom, on Council and Chair, Western European Regional board), International Society of Glomerular Disease, Renal Pathology Lupus Nephritis Working Group, Women in Nephrology and SONG-GD. She is an editor for Nephrology, Dialysis and Transplantion, for the domains “Pregnancy” and “Policy and Equity”.
