Motoko Yanagita, M.D., Ph.D. is the first Professor and Chair of Department of Nephrology at Kyoto University Graduate School of Medicine, Kyoto, Japan since 2011. She received her M.D. and Ph.D. degrees at Kyoto University and residency training at Kyoto University Hospital. She is a physician scientist who conducts basic and clinical research. Her basic research areas are the pathophysiology of AKI and the mechanism of AKI to CKD transition. Her current research focuses on tertiary lymphoid tissues, which are inflammatory microenvironments formed after AKI, and the visualization of energy dynamics during and after AKI using FRET-based genetically engineered mice and two-photon microscopy. Her clinical research area is onconephrology, a new area connecting oncology and nephrology. She has published clinical practice guidelines for this area in 2022. She has been an elected member of the American Society of Clinical Investigation since 2013, an Executive Supervisor of the Japanese Society of Nephrology, and an Executive Committee member of KDIGO since January 2024.
