MuzamilHassan
I completed my undergraduate medical education at Obafemi Awolowo University, Nigeria in 2005. In 2012, I finished my professional training in Nephrology in Nigeria, obtaining an FMCP certification. In 2015, as an ISN-Schrier funded Fellow, I successfully completed the Nephrology fellowship program of the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa. In the same year, I completed a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Internal Medicine at the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa. Currently, I hold the positions of Senior Lecturer and Honorary Consultant Nephrologist at the Obafemi Awolowo University Medical School and Teaching Hospital, Nigeria. Additionally, in March 2022, I was appointed as an honorary lecturer in the Division of Nephrology, Department of Internal Medicine, University of Witwatersrand, South Africa. My primary focus is on providing comprehensive care for kidney disease patients and researching genetic factors contributing to cardiovascular and kidney health disparities in CKD patients of African ancestry. My research has focused on the epidemiology of kidney disease, sickle cell nephropathy, and the impact of atherosclerosis on CKD patients. I have utilized molecular-based techniques to study the role of circulating endotoxaemia and genetic influences on atherosclerosis severity in CKD patients. I recently completed my post-doctoral research, supported by the Africa Research Excellence Fund Fellowship. My research focused on validating differentially expressed microRNAs associated with kidney tubular dysfunction in HIV-positive patients from Nigeria. I also led a project funded by the GSK Africa NCD Open Lab Grant, investigating the prevalence and genetic factors influencing Tenofovir nephrotoxicity in HIV-infected adults in South-Western Nigeria. I am currently the principal investigator for a Medical Research Foundation project studying the impact of climate change on kidney health in Nigerian agricultural workers. Currently, I am an ISN-KI editorial fellow. I contributed to writing breakthrough discoveries narratives in Nephrology for the 60th anniversary of the ISN. I served as Chair of the Nigerian Young Nephrologists Committee and member of the ISN Young Nephrologists Committee, ISN iNET-CKD Committee, and ISN Interventional Nephrology Committee.
