FernandaSales Luiz Vianna
I am a Genetics Professor at the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul and Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre, in the South of Brazil. I have been performing research in the areas of Human Genetics, Medical Genetics and Immunogenetics. One of my main research interests is to understand the role of the interaction between environmental exposures and genetic variability in the occurrence and severity of clinical outcomes in different human conditions. Among my research lines, I am leading a study, whose main goal is to identify genetic risk factors for Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) in Brazilian Afrodescendents. By whole genome sequencing (WGS), we are estimating the prevalence and penetrance of APOL1 high-risk alleles on CKD and in Covid-19 patients who had kidney complications during hospitalization. In addition, my research group is also studying the role and impact of APOL1 genotypes in the kidney transplantation in an admixture Brazilian population.
