Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Dr. Ayus is a Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of California Irvine, USA. He is a world-renowned nephrologist with expertise in the effects of sodium disorders on the brain. His group was the first to identify novel risk factors such as gender (pre-menopausal females), age (children), and hypoxia in hyponatremic encephalopathy. His group was the first to identify the combination of non-cardiogenic pulmonary edema and hyponatremia in marathon runners - the Ayus-Arieff syndrome. In addition, Dr. Ayus has championed the concept of rapid correction of hyponatremia as the preferred treatment. His work has been published in the most prestigious journals in medicine, including the New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet, JAMA, BMJ, Annals of Internal Medicine, Journal of Clinical Investigation, American Journal of Physiology, Kidney International, JASN, and CJASN.
