Dr. Charles Herzog is professor of medicine, University of Minnesota, and cardiologist at Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC)/Hennepin Healthcare for 39 years. He founded the program in interventional cardiology at HCMC and served as cardiac catheterization laboratory director (1985-1991), and cardiac ultrasound laboratory director (1997-2012). He directed the USRDS Cardiovascular Special Studies Center from 1999-2014. He participated in the development of the NKF K/DOQI Clinical Practice Guidelines for Cardiovascular Disease in Dialysis Patients and KDIGO Clinical Practice Guidelines on Acute Kidney Injury. He co-chaired the 2010 KDIGO Cardiovascular/CKD Controversies Conference, and was planning co-chair of the KDIGO Kidney, Heart, and Vascular Conference Series (2016-2020). He has chaired the Renal Committee of the ISCHEMIA-CKD Trial and Critical Event Committee of the CARSK Trial. He serves on the executive committees of the CARSK and DIALIZE-Outcomes trials, and the ISN cardio-kidney tool kit steering committee. He has been actively involved in clinical trials involving patients with CKD and cardiovascular disease for the past 25 years. He has over 300 published manuscripts. His special interests include heart disease in CKD patients and echocardiography.
