Kai-Uwe Eckardt is Professor of Medicine and Chair of the Department of Nephrology and Medical Intensive Care at Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin, Germany. He attained an MD from the University of Münster in 1985 and obtained residency and fellowship training in pathology, physiology, internal medicine and nephrology at the Universities of Münster, Hannover, Zurich, Oxford and the Charité in Berlin. Dr. Eckardt’s major research focus includes the molecular mechanism and (patho-) physiological relevance of oxygen sensing as well as mechanisms and systemic implications of acute and chronic kidney injury and disease. He was spokesperson of a Clinical Research Center (CRC) on \\\"Kidney Injury\\\" funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) at the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg (2004-2010) and vice-spokesperson of the CRC \\\"Renoprotection\\\" at Charité (2018-2023). He is also coordinator of the German Chronic Kidney Disease (GCKD) study, the worldwide largest prospective CKD cohort study. He has authored more than 600 publications, is currently a member of the editorial board of Kidney International and has previously served on the editorial boards of NDT, JASN, JMM and BMJ. Dr. Eckardt is a past council member of the ERA-EDTA and past member of the ISN Council, the ISN Executive Committee and past-chair of the ISN Forefronts Committee. He was a founding Executive Committee member of Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) and served as KDIGO co-chair from 2008 to 2012. He is an elected member of the Academy of Sciences and Literature, Mainz, Germany and the German National Academy of Sciences, Leopoldina.
