Professor Janaka Karalliedde PhD FRCP is a Clinical Professor of Diabetes, School of Cardiovascular Medicine and Metabolic Sciences, King's College London and Consultant Physician Guy’s and St Thomas Hospital London. Janaka graduated with a distinction in medicine from the University of London and was awarded UK Medical Research Council Clinical Research Training Fellowship. His PhD was on cardiovascular and renal complications of diabetes under the supervision of Professor Giancarlo Viberti at Guy’s Hospital and King’s College London He is a clinician scientist with a research programme focussed on cardio-renal complications in diabetes. His group reported the first evidence that people of African-Caribbean heritage with type 1 diabetes are at increased risk of kidney complications compared to people from other heritages. Other work has elucidated the role of arterial ageing on kidney disease and the role of ‘automated insulin delivery’ in people with diabetes on haemodialysis. He has more than 100 peer-reviewed publications on cardiovascular and kidney disease. Janaka has experience and expertise managing patients with kidney and cardiovascular complications at Guy’s and St Thomas Hospital and has led multi-award winning programme of work on using digital data/informatics to guide risk stratification and clinical prioritisation of high risk patients that is now embedded in routine care
