Chi-yuan Hsu, MD, MSc was born and finished high school in Hong Kong. He then moved to the United States where he attended Yale College (1985-9) and Harvard Medical School (1989-93). Dr. Hsu completed his internal medicine training at Boston’s Beth Israel Hospital and his renal fellowship at the Massachusetts General Hospital. He joined the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) School of Medicine faculty in 1999. He has been Chief of the Division of Nephrology at UCSF Health since 2007 and currently holds the Robert W. Schrier Distinguished Professorship. Dr. Hsu started his career investigating the epidemiology of chronic kidney disease. He has published multiple highly cited original research papers in the past 15 years on the bidirectional relation between chronic kidney disease and acute kidney injury. More recently, Dr. Hsu has expanded his research areas to include dialysis and kidney transplant and he has led several investigator-initiated clinical trials.
