Elke Schaeffner, MD, MSc is a board certified Nephrologist and an epidemiologist at the Institute of Public Health, Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin where she holds a professorship for Nephrology and Health Care Research. She studied Medicine at the University of Freiburg, Germany and obtained her Master of Science in Epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health, Boston, USA. Her primary fields of research are renal epidemiology and aging, focusing on chronic kidney disease as well as biomarkers for assessing renal function in an aging society. She is Principal Investigator of the "Berlin Initiative Study", a cohort investigating the epidemiology of CKD in persons aged 70+ over a decade. Since the beginning of 2022 Dr. Schaeffner has joined the editorial board of AJKD as international editor. In 2022, she was awarded the ASN distinguished leader award and was elected as an executive board member of the German Society of Nephrology.
