Dr Sandra Herrmann is Associate Professor of Medicine and a consultant in the Division of Nephrology and Hypertension at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN, USA. She obtained her medical degree from the Pontificia Universidade Catolica do Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS), Porto Alegre, Brazil and completed her Internship and Nephrology fellowship at the PUCRS -Hospital Sao Lucas. She did her post-doctoral research fellowship and then completed her Internal Medicine Residency and Nephrology Fellowship at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN, USA. She is a member of various scientific societies including American Society of Nephrology and a founding member of the American Society of Onconephrology (ASON) serving currently as co-Chair of the Position Statement Committee for the ASON. She is also associate editor for the Journal of Onconephrology and Nephrology Dialysis and Transplantation. Her research interests are onco-nephrology, onco-hypertension, renovascular hypertensive disease and regenerative medicine in nephrology. She has received NIH-NIDDK K08 career development award looking at hypoxic preconditioning to improve adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells function from patients with hypertensive kidney disease. Dr. Herrmann's research in onco-nephrology is focused on nephrotoxicity of cancer therapeutic agents such as immune checkpoint inhibitors, chimeric antigen receptor (CAR)-T cell therapy and other targeted cancer therapies such as VEGF/TKI inhibitors.
