The Video Abstract (VdA)Series, an initiative of the ISNEducation Social Media Team, was begun in 2021. VdAs are a unique educational tool which summarise the content of academic publications in audio-visual format, to make it more engaging to the audience and create awareness. They do not replace the full paper but can stimulate viewers to access and read it. The VdAs of ISNEducation are developed from selected articles published in Kidney international (KI) and Kidney International Reports (KIR). They are shared on X, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and, more recently, BlueSky and Threads. From 2025 onwards they have been featured on the KIR website, and the same is soon to follow for those of KI.

This study aimed to quantitatively evaluate the impact of the ISN VdA Series initiative. Data on video impressions and engagements were collected and analyzed from Twitter(X)and Facebook covering the period from November 2021 to August 2025. We compared data before and after 1st January 2023 to examine the effect of the transfer of ownership of Twitter(X) on users.

Since November 2021, the ISN VdA Series has featured 92 studies published in Kidney International Reports (KIR, n=44), Kidney International (KI, n=47) and the ISN-DOPPS initiative (n=1). Analysis of data for use on X showed a total of 237745 impressions, 7991 engagements, and 39110 video views. There were 5830 detail expands. People reached, engagements and video views on Facebook were 47146, 1450 and 21256, respectively. Overall, the ratio of Facebook “people reached” to X impressions was 0.20. Before 2023 this was 0.14 compared to 0.25 after 2023.

After January 2023, the  video abstracts with he maximum impressions on X were "Efficacy and safety of pegcetacoplan in kidney transplant recipients with recurrent C3G or primary IC-MPGN: 12-week results from the NOBLE study" and "The effects of plasma exchange and glucocorticoids on early kidney function among patients with ANCA-associated vasculitis in the PEXIVAS trial:" with 4699 and 4200 each. On Facebook the abstract which reached the most people were "A nationwide cohort study comparing the effectiveness of diuretics and calcium channel blockers on top of renin-angiotensin system inhibitors on chronic kidney disease progression and mortality" with a reach of 1136 and "The Mayo MGRS Prediction Tool calculates the risk of finding monoclonal gammopathy of renal significance in a kidney biopsy in patients with monoclonal gammopathy" with a reach of 1083. Clinical abstracts were more popular than those belonging to the basic sciences.

In conclusion, videos abstracts continue to be a useful tool for disseminating the results of cutting-edge research. The proportionally lower use of X could reflect the reduction in popularity. However, it remains the most used platform used for viewing VdAs.
