Enuresis, a common childhood disorder with potential disruptive psychological impact in children, which may be also age dependent. The relationship between enuresis and psychological morbidity in children has been the subject of few studies which concluded that enuresis is associated with psychological difficulties. The aim of our study was to evaluate psychosocial correlates of enuresis in children and adolescent in a single Centre-study in Lagos, Nigeria.
Using multi-stage sampling, participants were recruited from public and private schools. Enuresis was diagnosed according to International Children’s Continence Society criteria. Psychosocial correlates were evaluated using the Strength and Difficulty Questionnaire (SDQ). Data were analyzed descriptively and psychosocial correlates of enuresis was explored through logistic regression.

Enuresis prevalence was 14.6%, higher in males (16.8%) than females (12.8%), and decreased with age. It was significantly associated with low socioeconomic status (p<0.001). Children with enuresis had higher Strength and Difficulty Questionnaire scores (12–17) than those without enuresis (7–13), indicating more psychological difficulties (p=0.003), which worsened with age (p<0.003).

Children with enuresis are more likely to experience psychosocial challenges, and these difficulties intensify as they grow older.
