The kidney transplant programme in Burkina Faso has just become a reality with the first kidney transplant performed in our country.Previously, patients requiring a kidney transplant were forced to seek treatment abroad. In order to improve the care of kidney transplant patients, an assessment of the current situation was necessary.  We study the fate of patients with kidney transplants abroad and followed in the nephrology services of Burkina Faso over the period from January 1, 2013 to December 31, 2022.

A retrospective cross-sectional descriptive study with retrospective data collection over a 9-year period from January 2013 to December 2022. We included in our study all foreign kidney transplant patients followed in Burkina Faso.

The mean age of the patients was 48±10 years (extremes 24 and 71). The sex ratio was 3.9. Hypertension was found in 90.5% of patients and diabetes in 12.2%. The mean age of the graft was 37 months in our study. All patients had a shared follow-up and the compliance with the follow-up schedule was 65.8%. The complications identified were respectively: infectious complications, which were more frequent in 51.2% of the patients, additional AKI /NTA in 26.8%, metabolic complications in 19.5% and cardiovascular complications in 2.4%. The survival rate of the grafts at 6 months, 12 months and 60 months was respectively 90.2; 80.4 and 24.3%. and of our patients was at 6 months, 12 months and 60 months was respectively 90.2; 80.4 and 24.3%.

Follow-up of kidney transplant patients in Burkina Faso is characterized by average adherence to follow-up and frequent infectious complications compromising functional and vital prognosis.
