Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a progressive and prevalent disorder affecting 10% of the global population(1). Epidemiologists and Global Burden of Disease (GBD) studies have established CKD as a “leading cause of worldwide mortality”(2), yet young adults (aged 15-39 years) lack targeted CKD education(3). Chronic kidney disease prevention and management highlights the importance of various lifestyle choices (including a healthy diet, regular exercise, and smoking cessation). To address this gap, we created KidneyKeeper, a mobile phone application designed to raise awareness about kidney-protective behaviours and help users incorporate them into their daily routine.  


To develop KidneyKeeper, we conducted a comparative review of other existing medical and health-tracking apps to identify effective design and engagement features. Furthermore, from the information gathered, we have identified that currently available content and dissemination platforms do not aim to promote prevention habits and general education content centres on patients rather than promoting awareness and prevention of kidney diseases. Taking this into account, we developed KidneyKeeper, which includes key functions such as monitoring sleep duration (hours/day), fluid intake (ml/day), dietary and salt consumption (g/day), and the daily physical activity levels (min/day). The app also features educational content with interactive and visual explanations of kidney physiology and the relationship between lifestyle factors and CKD progression. To enhance user engagement from younger adults, we included gamification elements such as daily streaks, challenges among friends, and achievement badges.Following KidneyKeeper’s development and presentation, we conducted a small-scale usability test to assess the app’s functionality and design.

Preliminary feedback from participants was positive, highlighting the app’s interface and informative content. Building on these results, we plan to conduct a six-week pilot study using the globally recognized mHealth app usability questionnaire (MAUQ) to receive further feedback and standardized results which can be used to objectively improve the app.

After this, we aim to publicly launch KidneyKeeper for broad use, and we aim to build a collaboration with patient organizations or other international kidney health stakeholders using the app’s anonymized user data to further progress CKD prevention research and innovation.
