Kidney disease is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide directly or indirectly through cardiovascular diseases. It is a silent sword and remains undetected until late in most of the cases. Diabetes and hypertension are the leading causes of kidney disease. So we introduced this simple card to keep a track of kidney health.

On the occasion of world kidney day we introduced the “B on track” card. This card was distributed to everyone who walks in to the hospital, both patients and attenders. This was commenced keeping in mind the theme of this year- “are your kidneys ok?- detect early; protect kidney health”.

We have asked them to keep a track of 2 important B’s namely

1) Body mass index- BMI(weight/ height*height)  and

2) Blood pressure- BP.

Education was given as to how to calculate or measure these two simple parameters.

The card was widely accepted and procured by most of them. They found it easy to follow the simple measures. They were also aware of their risk for kidney diseases.

Obesity, metabolic syndrome can lead on to one developing diabetes and hypertension. These two parameters proved to be simple, cost effective and easy to monitor. It did not require professional expertise nor a needle prick and can be monitored at home. Many carried home the message and this directed us to uncover the obesity and Hypertension in other family members who did not visit the hospital as well. This can be extended to the community for better kidney health preservation and early detection of kidney diseases.
