Extensive research in oncology demonstrates that early, integrated palliative care improves quality of life, communication, and alignment of treatment with patient values. There is robust consensus that a similar care model is required in chronic kidney disease, however further evidence is required to develop structured, evidence-based supportive care. Leveraging established oncology data offers an efficient strategy to accelerate the development and implementation of effective, evidence-based palliative models for renal supportive care.

A scoping review using PRISMA-ScR guidelines is being conducted across various databases including PubMed, MEDLINE (Ovid), Embase, and Cochrane Library to identify transferable oncology palliative care mechanisms. Additional sources will include key international specialist guidelines and other relevant grey literature. Quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-method studies will be included in order to encompass the multidimensional character of palliative care. Eligible publications will focus on adult oncology palliative care models, mechanisms, or frameworks with measurable patient or service outcomes, and published between 2020-2025. Secondary search for renal supportive care with the same inclusion criteria will identify overlapping principles and knowledge gaps. Data will be cross mapped against relevant renal supportive care domains, such as timing of referral, care plan, symptom management, advanced care planning, integration, grief support, culture, and communication. Comparative analysis will assess which oncology mechanisms are directly translatable, require adaptation, or lack renal equivalents.

Please note that this is an ongoing project.

Results of this review will propose a conceptual knowledge translation framework to guide evidence-based renal supportive care implementation. By leveraging mature oncology data, this approach aims to accelerate the development of evidence-informed, resource-efficient renal supportive care pathways. The ongoing synthesis will refine this framework and identify implementation research priorities for global kidney health systems.
