MOrtality rates remain high in the haemodialysis population due to a multitude of factors. We were interested to examine the relationship between hospitalizaiton and mortality.
Many organizations are focussed on mortality with resources dedicated towards understanding mortality events (eg. mortality case reviews etc). There is there less of a focus on the prevention of hospitalization. We hypothesize that there is a strong link between hospitalization events and eventual mortality of the patient.
Davita Malaysia operates 71 clinics throughtout the country, serving 3800 patients. Among the 71 clinics; 44 clinics had been under Davita Management for > than 1 year. We chose these clinics to review. Retrospective analysis was done from September 2024 through September 2025. All patients who had received at least 1 dialysis session in a the selected clinics were included. Hospitalizations were defined as requiring > 1 night stay in a hospital facility. All mortality cases were included.
Hospitalization numbers were fairly stable throughout the 12-month period of analysis. In certain months where hospitalization numbers peaked, they were reflected in the mortality numbers as well.
The majority (as high as 60%) of deaths occurred during hospitalizations. Up to 31% of deaths occurred within 30 days from hospitalization suggesting a strong link between hospitalization and mortality. Deaths continue to occur up to 6months post hospitalization
Hospitalization carries a strong impact on mortality. It would benefit dialysis providers to concentrate their efforts not only on mortality but to equally allocate resources to preventing hospitalizaitons.
