As far as we know, there has been no epidemiological reports on chronic kidney disease (CKD)-associated pruritus (CKD-aP) with large sample size in China in recent years. We aimed to investigate the prevalence and related factors of CKD-aP in China.
This study included data on 9,896 patients with uremia in 30 provincial-level administrative divisions in mainland China between May 2022 and December 2022. The questionnaire involved basic patient information, clinical and laboratory test results.
The prevalence of CKD-aP in Chinese uremic patients was 61.6%. The prevalence of moderate to severe pruritus was 16.4%, and the prevalence of severe pruritus was 3.5%. The prevalence of pruritus, moderate to severe pruritus and severe pruritus in hemodialysis (HD) patients was 61.1%, 16.6% and 3.5%, respectively. Smoking history, diabetic nephropathy, cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, skin diseases, dialysis vintage, eosinophil count, serum total calcium, and serum phosphorus were risk factors for CKD-aP.
Our study reported the prevalence of CKD-aP and its risk factors in the Chinese uremic population, which may contribute to the prevention of CKD-aP.
