Rwanda's healthcare system has faced challenges in providing accurate and timely diagnoses for kidney diseases due to limited diagnostic capabilities and a shortage of trained specialists. The International Society of Nephrology (ISN) Educational Ambassadors Program (EAP) has played a pivotal role in addressing these challenges by enhancing the skills and expertise of Rwandan healthcare professionals.
The primary objective of the ISN EAP in Rwanda is to enhance the country's renal pathology services through targeted, hands-on training and mentorship. By deploying international experts to collaborate with local healthcare professionals, the program aims to:
-To equip Rwandan nephrologists and pathologists with advanced skills in renal pathology techniques, including histopathology, immunofluorescence, electron microscopy, and molecular diagnostics.
-To enhance the precision and timeliness of kidney disease diagnoses, leading to better patient outcomes
-To support the establishment and improvement of renal pathology laboratories and dialysis centers within Rwanda.
- To establish long-term collaborations between ISN EAP and Rwandan institutions to ensure continuous professional development and knowledge exchange.
The ISN EAP employed a structured approach to enhance renal pathology services in Rwanda through targeted interventions:
Expert Deployment: Renal center in Rwanda, Kigali University Teaching Hospital, CHUK, applied to host ISN Educational Ambassador for specialized training in renal pathology. The ambassador, recognized expert in nephropathology, provided hands-on training and guidance to local healthcare professionals.
Customized Training Plan: The training was tailored to the specific needs of the host center, focused on areas such as histopathology, immunofluorescence, equipment and infrastructure The training started from March 1 up to March 15, 2025.
Mentorship and Capacity Building: The program aims to the long-term mentorship, fostering ongoing professional development and capacity building among local healthcare providers. The ultimate goal is to establish sustainable renal pathology services in Rwanda.
Evaluation and Impact Assessment: The effectiveness of the training is assessed through both qualitative and quantitative methods, including interviews with fellowship recipients and analysis of diagnostic accuracy and patient outcomes. This data informs continuous improvement of the program.
