An earthquake struck Myanmar on March 28, 2025. The quake caused extensive damage, which was reported worldwide, particularly in the areas and dialysis facilities around Mandalay and Naypyidaw. Prof. Kriang Tungsanga of the Nephrology Society of Thailand acted swiftly. He obtained information from Prof. Khin Thida Thwin, the former president of the Myanmar Nephro-Urology Society who currently resides in Yangon. Prof. Tungsanga then contacted to Prof. Hideki Kawanishi, President of NGO Ubiquitous Blood Purification International (NGO UBPI), Japan. As a result, dialysis societies in Japan provided consumables to affected areas in Myanmar. Analysis of the cooperative relationship between Japan and the international community during the Myanmar earthquake disaster

We analyzed and examined the collaboration between Myanmar, Thailand, and Japan during the Myanmar earthquake disaster in a chronological manner.

Prof. Khin Thida Thwin (Yangon), Prof. Yi Yi Khine (Naypyidaw), Prof. Ko Ko Naing (Mandalay) of the Myanmar Nephro-Urorogy Society, and Prof. Tungsanga had participated in the Japanese Society for Dialysis Therapy (JSDT) Annual Meeting multiple times in the past and maintained close relationships with NGO UBPI. On Friday, March 28, an earthquake struck the regions centered around Mandalay and Naypyidaw. On Wednesday, April 2, the safty of Prof. Khine from the Nephrology Department at Naypyidaw General Hospital was confirmed via Messenger, and it was informed that dialysis could be resumed on Thursday, April 3. On Wednesday, April 4th, Prof. Tungsanga contacted Prof. Thida Thwin. Information was obtained that dialysis consumables were needed at dialysis facilities in both Mandalay and Naypyidaw. This information was relayed to Prof. Kawanishi, on Tuesday, April 8th. Requests were made to JSDT, Japanese Society for Technology of Blood Purification, and Clinical Engineering Global Promotion Foundation to secure funding for purchasing dialysis consumables. On April 9th, Prof. Khine directly emailed to NGO UBPI confirming the need for dialysis dialyzers, dialysis circuits, dialysis needles, and dialysis solution. Local procurement and transportation arrangements were handled by Mr. Yoshinori Komaru, a member of the NGO UBPI residing in Yangon. In order to avoid hindering the development of local companies selling Japanese products, we decided not to distribute products from Japan for free. Instead, with the assistance of Nipro Corporation and Nikkiso Co., Ltd., we purchased and distributed them directly from local companies. The first supplies arrived in Naypyidaw on April 24 and Mandalay on April 25.

The international exchange relationships built through regular face-to-face interactions proved an effective way for rapid collaboration during disaster. A list of country representative for emergency contact as well as contingency plan should be prepared ahead.
