Emotionally challenging behaviors, such as defensive or emotionally charged reactions, are common in dialysis units worldwide. These behaviors increase staff stress and disrupt care continuity, yet responses have traditionally relied on personal experience and inconsistent strategies. To address this, we developed a structured manual using generative AI (ChatGPT) to analyze patients’ psychological backgrounds, refined through collaboration with a licensed psychologist.
Nurses documented real-world cases of challenging patient behaviors. A physician entered these narratives into ChatGPT, instructing it to analyze the patient’s psychological state and propose tailored communication strategies. A licensed psychologist reviewed and refined the AI’s draft to ensure accuracy, appropriateness, and ethical soundness. The revised content was re-input into ChatGPT to produce a finalized, staff-ready manual.
Qualitative outcomes demonstrated:
- Consistency: Staff reported reduced variability in responses, supporting unified team communication.
- Practical usability: Manuals provided clear, ready-to-use scripts for both new and experienced staff.
- Educational value: Manuals served as training tools for onboarding and professional development.
Generative AI can provide valuable first-draft insights into managing emotionally challenging dialysis patients, but expert psychological review is essential to ensure safe and context-appropriate use. This collaborative workflow offers a replicable model for multidisciplinary nephrology care and can be adapted to diverse healthcare settings worldwide.
