Chronic kidney disease is a growing problem, with high morbidity and mortality, many years lost and affecting the quality of life of hemodialysis patients and their families at a high cost. Public support for hemodialysis is available in Bolivia, a less developed country since 2014, and we feel important to analyze at present, the quality of life achieved.
In a descriptive and transversal study, 66 patients were surveyed at a private ambulatory Unit at a moderate high altitude, 2500 meters above sea level (normal Hb 13 gr/L). In 2022, after informed consent, the F-12 survey was applied with a confidence interval higher than 95%.
60% of patients reported a tendency to feel not in good health, with physical limitations on moderate efforts, but with no tendency to stop performing normal tasks. However, 64% of patients surveyed manifested to feel not sad or discouraged and with enough energy to participate in social events with their families and friends.
With an individualized treatment, trained staff, optimal resources and adequate control of anemia according to altitude, quality of life achieved has been good, but our findings should include public hospitals, other Units at different altitudes, family support, social and ethical issues.
