Chronic pain is common in patients on maintenance hemodialysis, and is often associated to impaired quality of life (QOL). Moreover, it has been shown that chronic pain may increase mortality in this population

Objective: To determine the prevalence of chronic pain and assess its characteristics and implications on the daily lives of patients on maintenance hemodialysis (MHD)

We conducted a 6 months cross-sectional study in adult patients on MHD for at least 3months. All patients were interviewed on the day of their hemodialysis session. Sociodemographic, clinical and para-clinical were collected using a pre-established questionnaire. A written numerical Rating Scale was used to measure pain intensity and Multidimensional Pain Inventory (MPI) questionnaire to assess the pain on participants’ life.

Pain has a high prevalence in our study population, mostly reported by cramps, and it greatly impacts the quality of their sleep.
