Kidney biopsy was first introduced in Mongolia in 2011 at the First Central Hospital in Ulaan-Baatar.

Up to now (mid 2023) 305 biopsies have been performed mainly for ESKD patients with a clinical and biological picture of glomerulonephritis (GN).

We decided to summarize our experience in renal biopsy over that time period

All mongolian patients requiring a renal biopsy are sent to our kidney center in Ulaan Baatar. Renal biopsy is performed during real-time echography using a 18 gauge needle.

Biopsy specimens are processed for optical and immunofluorescence evaluation using standard techniques

Biopsy result N
IgA nephropathy 153
Membranous nephropathy 51
Minimal change disease 50
Membranoproliferative GN 14
Lupus nephritis 11
Focal and segmental glomerulosclerosis 8
Others 8
Unclassified 4
Mesangial proliferative GN 3
Myeloma 1
Post-infectious 1
Sarcoidosis 1
Age of our patients ranged from 19 to 60 years old. All patients with IgA nephropathy were younger than 46 years and 55% were male.

IgA nephropathy was seen in 50% of our biopsies. It remains a challenging disease in terms of treatment and is the most frequently diagnosed primary GN in Asian countries such as Japan, China or South Korea. We confirm this in Mongolia also.
