World Kidney Day, an initiative by the International Society of Nephrology (ISN), aims to raise awareness among the population about Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), a condition that affects approximately 10% of the global population, including 10 million Brazilians, with the majority unaware of their diagnosis. Albuminuria, a marker of kidney damage, is associated with serious risks, and the Dipstick Test is a simple and rapid method to detect it. This study conducted a population survey, using the Dipstick Test, on respondents during the World Kidney Day campaign in a low-development city in Brazil.
A cross-sectional study, of both quantitative and qualitative nature, was conducted through the collection of secondary data obtained during an epidemiological survey conducted at the 2023 World Kidney Day campaign by the Brazilian Society of Nephrology in Piauí, in Teresina.
The results showed that 31.10% of the patients were in the age range between 60 and 69 years, and those between 50 and 59 years accounted for 26.22% of the patients. The average age was calculated as 55.09 years.

Regarding the most prevalent comorbidities, hypertension and diabetes accounted for 33.80% and 12.96%, respectively.

In relation to blood pressure measurement, 10.37% had blood pressure ≥ 160/100 mmHg, 15.85% were in the range of 140-159 mmHg systolic and 90-100 mmHg diastolic, 10.37% between 130-139 mmHg and 85-89 mmHg, and 63.41% had levels < 130/85 mmHg.

CHART 4: Blood pressure measured (non-standardized) among respondents analyzed during the World Kidney Day campaign in Teresina, PI, Brazil, 2023.

Only 26.22% of the respondents had knowledge of what creatinine is.

The majority (89.54%) had never used non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or used them sporadically, while 10.46% reported frequent use.

17.78% showed some form of alteration in the Dipstick Test, including 11.11% with proteinuria, 2.22% with glucosuria, and 4.44% with hematuria and proteinuria.

It can be concluded that the group of subjects who were spontaneously evaluated during the World Kidney Day campaign was predominantly composed of adults over 50 years of age, with diabetes mellitus (DM) and hypertension (HAS) as the primary comorbidities. Of these subjects, 36.59% had hypertension at the time of evaluation, 73.78% were unaware of the importance of creatinine measurement, 71.9% used non- steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) regularly or sporadically, and 15.55% presented proteinuria or hematuria associated with proteinuria.
