The Latin American Dialysis and Renal Transplantation Registry (LADRTR), founded in 1991, has collected data and reports on patients receiving kidney replacement therapy (KRT) since 1993. The main goals of the LADRTR is to promote the development of national registries, consolidate a data system for KRT in Latin America (LA), return the data provided by nephrologist to the different stakeholders that participate in the decision making process, while contributing to the universal knowledge of prevention, incidence and evolution of the disease in the region. This abstract summarizes the registry data for 2021.
Participating countries complete an annual survey collecting aggregated data on incident and prevalent patients on KRT in all modalities. The different treatment modalities considered were hemodialysis (HD), peritoneal dialysis (PD) and living functioning kidney graft (LFG). We gathered information of the gross domestic product per capita (GDP, expressed in US dollars) and life expectancy at birth (LEB) for the year 2021 from the World Bank Data Bank. We analyzed the prevalence and incidence comparing them to previous years and establishing correlations with GDP and LEB. We analyzed the countries based on their prevalence rate based on the goal of ≥ 700pmp established by PAHO/SLANH for 2019.
After the decline in the KRT rate in 2020 likely due to COVID-19, an increase is seen in the incidence and prevalence, as well as the kidney transplant rate in the region. There are still significant differences between countries, thus evidencing differences in accessibility and coverage of health services.
