Asia has the lowest rate of organ transplantation, especially deceased donations despite having the highest growth rate of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and end stage kidney disease (ESKD). This survey was done to evaluate the knowledge, awareness and attitude regarding deceased donation among the family members of CKD patients in Bangladesh.
This cross-sectional study was conducted from January to July, 2023 among family members accompanying CKD patients in a tertiary care center in Dhaka. A questionnaire constructed by the Asian Society of Transplantation was used as the data collection tool. Analysis was done by SAS studio.
A total of 280 family members participated, with a mean age of 48 years. It was a male predominant (76%) group, comprising of businessmen, teachers, engineers, lawyers and other professionals.
Despite being a major stakeholder, 22% never heard of deceased donation and only 39% believed that they knew it well enough. Only 16% had ever participated in any educational program. Two-third knew the difference between brain-death and vegetative-state.
Despite being a major stakeholder, only 59% had a moderate to positive attitude towards deceased donation. While the majority were contemplating the idea, only 6% were willing to donate and had registered as a donor. Majority (41%) listed lack of information about donation or registration as the reason behind their unwillingness. Those who were contemplating, were mostly hesitant fearing the opinion of their family and friends.
Outdoor campaigns (39%) and television commercials (28%) were thought to be the best method for raising awareness. Majority (28%) believed that social support programs for the donor’s bereaved family would be the best way to support deceased donation in the future.
Knowledge, awareness and positive attitude regarding deceased donation is lacking in Bangladesh. Educational programs are needed to change this status.
