Patient and family engagement is key to achieving a health system that is responsive to patients, and improving patient outcomes. However, few practical resources for purposeful engagement exist.

Since 2019, BC Renal developed and implemented a patient and family engagement framework to formalize and enable meaningful engagement in support of better person- and family-centered care in British Columbia (BC), Canada.

The BC Renal Patient and Family Engagement Advisory Committee, consisting of patient partners and health professionals from all regional health authorities, directs the outreach, resource development, and evaluation of patient and family engagement in BC Renal. We monitor metrics and survey patient partners, committee chairs, and support personnel annually to capture the experience of working together. We have also produced videos featuring committee chairs and patient partners sharing their stories of working together.

Despite adversity in recent years, more patient and family voices have been integrated into BC Renal work. Specifically, the network of patients and family caregivers grew by 56% in 2022. Although there is still much room for improvement in the inclusion of patient voices from various backgrounds, we heard from more diverse voices in engagement activities. The 2022 survey of those involved found that 95% were satisfied with the engagement opportunities, and the narrative feedback highlighted that our provincial kidney network members continued to adopt practical ways to listen, learn and work together more effectively. Improvement opportunities included acknowledging the specific influence of patient partners, and more role clarification for the patient partners and all involved in supporting them.

Meaningful and impactful engagement at BC Renal has been made possible through alignment with various operational and strategic activities, along with the application of the patient and family engagement framework. Health professionals, staff, patient partners and other partners continue to work together collegially to advance culture change in kidney care provincially.
