Quizzes are useful for making learning more engaging and interactive. It is a learner-centric tool that encourages active participation and curiosity. We aimed to evaluate the utility of interactive quizzes as a novel tool for online education in nephrology.
Each online quiz was an untimed activity presented on the https://outgrow.co/ platform covering a topic of clinical relevance in nephrology in a case-based pattern. It was freely available on web browsers on laptops or mobile devices and shared over social media platforms via clickable links. Each quiz comprised of ten multiple-choice questions, which can be completed in less than 20 minutes. An explanation was provided at the end of each question, along with the link to the research article justifying the correct answer. A link to an informative tweet was also provided with most of the questions, which helped solve the question, along with supporting infographics, visual abstracts, and pictures from reference articles. On completion, each participant was given a personal score, a global rank in real-time, and a summary answer key. Winners were acknowledged and were awarded E-Certificates. An optional and anonymous feedback was taken via Google form at the end of each quiz. All these quizzes were archived online in the ISN academy for ready recurrence.
56 quizzes were published between May 2019 and August 2023. Quizzes garnered participation across the globe, with 55.5% participants from Asia, 20.4 % from North America, 9.2% from Europe, 4.7% from Africa, 2.9% from South America,1.8% from Oceania. Median [IQR] page visits per quiz were 433 [252.5 – 650]. Median [IQR] completed attempts made were 245 [121-364]. Quizzes were mostly completed on mobile devices [88.7%], emphasizing easy accessibility. Compared to 2019, participation significantly increased in 2020 and 2021 (p = 0.46 for page visits and p = 0.32 for completed attempts). The median [IQR] score for quizzes was 3.79 [1.21,6.06]. Sixteen (28.5%) quizzes were based on information shared during various conferences. The feedback survey received 435 responses. 99.5% of responders agreed that the quizzes were an effective educational tool, and 96.3% found the references helpful. 97% completed the quiz in less than 20 minutes. 88% found the difficulty level optimum, and 73% asserted that the quiz length (10 questions) was appropriate.
Interactive web-based quizzes proved to be an effective resource in facilitating active learning. They can be made freely available, repeatedly usable, and are not restricted by time and location. They can be repeatedly attempted, which underscores their long-term utility.
