There are several factors that have an influence on the appearance of post-transplant infections such as states of neutropenia and immunosuppression; They can have a great influence on the appearance of infections, one of them is the BK virus infection.
Currently there are no effective antiviral agents for BKV infection and the mainstay of controlling its reactivation in transplantation is the reduction of immunosuppression.
Observational, descriptive, prospective, cross-sectional study. Not probabilistic, for convenience. Of the kidney transplant patients, from the Department of Adult Nephrology of the Hospital de Clínicas , who underwent PCR for BKV in the period from August 2019 to May 2022.
27 patients with BKV testing were included, of which 11.11% (3) had positive isolation in plasma or urine. The average age of patients with positive isolation was 39±3 years, with a maximum age of 52 and minimum of 22 years. Of them (66.6%) were female, 100% from the Central department. The average time elapsed between the transplant and the primary infection in blood or urine was 4 months, of which 66.6% occurred between 4 months. Regarding the type of donors, (66.6%) were cadaveric donors and (33.3%) were living donors.
The prevalence of BKV in transplanted patients from the Hospital de Clínicas was 11.11%, the average age of those infected was 39 years, predominantly female, from the Central department, the average time elapsed between the transplant and the primary infection was of 4 months. In those studied, cadaveric donors predominated.
