The aim of the study was to evaluate risk factors for the development of chronic kidney disease in patients with hypertension admitted to Khartoum state health centers.
A 1:2 case-control study was conducted at Alshaheeda Salma Dialysis Center and primary health care centers , Khartoum.
Cases were defined as patients with chronic kidney failure and hypertension as the cause of their chronic kidney failure, while controls were hypertensive patients without chronic kidney failure.
Mean age of the cases was(53.2) years, age of the controls was about (57.4)years. 56% of the cases were males and 44% were female while 30% of the controls were males and 70% were females. 46% of the cases were of normal weight, 28% were overweight, 16% were under weight and 10% were obese, while 40% of the controls were obese, 31% were overweight, 27% were of normal weight and only 2% were underweight. 44% of hypertensive patients who developed chronic kidney disease are decreasing salt intake in their meals and 75% of hypertensive patients without chronic kidney disease decreasing salt intake in their meals.Duration of hypertension was longer (188.6) in hypertensive patients who developed chronic kidney disease and shorter in hypertensive patients without chronic kidney disease (120.5) months. 24% of hypertensive patients who had developed chronic kidney disease are not taking any anti-hypertensive drug and 42%, are taking one,two to three, and 60.5% of them are taking their drugs regularly .while only 2% of hypertensive patients without chronic kidney disease are not taking anti-hypertensive drug and 60% are taking one,two to three, and 90.8% of them are taking their drugs regularly.
Significant difference between hypertensive patients who developed chronic kidney disease and hypertensive patients with out chronic kidney. There was statistically significant difference between the two tested groups regarding: age, gender, body mass index ,marrital status, educational level, occupation ,performing regular exercise, family history of CKD, decreasing salt intake, duration of hypertension, number of anti-hypertensive drugs. The study recommended regular health educational sessions that should be organized to increase the awareness of hypertensive patients about the risk factors.
