Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a progressive disease, one of its main etiologies being Diabetic Nephropathy, which in an advanced stage can lead the patient to require renal replacement therapy (RRT). Multidisciplinary monitoring is of great importance both in early treatment and in more advanced stages to reduce the complications of CKD and improve the quality of life of these patients. Adequate treatment with the use of nephroprotective medications, herbal medicines, probiotics, vitamins and essential amino acids can slow the progression of the disease. Our study's main objective is to show the improvement in kidney function and diabetes control with nutritional alternatives using propolis extract and oregano tea.
The present work is a descriptive clinical case study in an outpatient clinic in the city of Boa Vista, State of Roraima, Brazil. Three patients (2 male and 1 female), aged 50 to 78 years, with CKD and diabetes were monitored for a period of 1 year (August/22 to August/23) through assessment of nutritional status and collection of laboratory tests quarterly. The variables analyzed were glomerular filtration rate, levels of creatinine, urea, fasting blood glucose, glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), phosphorus, potassium, calcium, 24-hour proteinuria and Pth. Nutritional strategies were used for CKD associated with the use of propolis extract with oregano tea at night before bed.
The results in this study showed that the use of oregano and propolis extract in chronic kidney disease proved to be effective in recovering from CKD as well as in delaying the progression of the disease, consequently bringing a better quality of life to patients. More in-depth studies must be carried out with a larger number of patients so that we can demonstrate this with more robust data.
