Dialysis consumes vast quantities of water and generates significant carbon and waste, and the machines themselves have changed little in fifty years. Could new technology change that? This session examines three developments now in or approaching the clinic: water-conserving portable peritoneal and haemodialysis systems, wearable peritoneal dialysis, and sorbent-based portable haemodialysis. For each we ask what it does to water and energy use, what the evidence so far shows, and what it would take to deliver at scale - including in resource-limited settings.
