This session explores the kidney's central role in placental disease—from mechanism to biomarkers to global burden. We first cover the science linking renal reserve to placentation: how a blunted gestational rise in renal function limits plasma volume expansion, promotes placental ischemia, and drives angiogenic imbalance injuring maternal vasculature. We then examine angiogenic biomarkers for diagnosing preeclampsia in chronic kidney disease. Finally, we review pregnancy-related acute kidney injury (PRAKI), an under-recognised driver of maternal and perinatal mortality in poorer settings.
