Session Title: Rethinking IgA Nephropathy Through Mucosal Immunity: Integrating Tonsillar and Intestinal Perspectives
Organized by: Viatris Pharmaceuticals Japan G.K.

Session Description:

This session provides an integrated overview of tonsillar and intestinal mucosal immunity in IgA nephropathy (IgAN). The session reviews how immune activation within the tonsils may contribute to the onset and progression of IgAN and summarizes key basic and clinical data on tonsillectomy-based treatment strategies. It then moves to the gut–kidney axis, highlighting intestinal immunity as the major source of IgA production and examining how dysregulated mucosal IgA responses and microbiota-related signals can trigger and sustain disease activity. By viewing IgAN simultaneously from tonsil- and gut-centred perspectives, the session offers a practical framework that links mucosal immune mechanisms to clinical decision-making.

Learning Objectives:
1. Understand the roles of tonsillar and gut mucosal immunity in IgA nephropathy (IgAN).
2. Learn the practical aspects of tonsillectomy for IgAN, including basic surgical technique and perioperative care.
3. Relate gut-derived immune and microbiota mechanisms to the pathophysiology of IgAN.
