Introduction:
Oxalic acid is a toxic organic compound, commonly used as a reducing agent in photography, bleaching and dust removal, floor cleaner as well as being found in certain plants and natural sources. Oxalic acid as a toxin is mostly described in the context of ethylene glycol poisoning, as it is a metabolite of ethylene glycol. Other reported cases of isolated oxalic acid poisoning involve the consumption of food, medications and plants that contain the compound, for example, star fruit and ascorbic acid . Human reports of toxicological effects are relatively uncommon but include gastrointestinal effects, hypocalcemia secondary to calcium oxalate crystal formation and renal toxicity. There have been many reports of oxalic acid intoxication caused by ethylene glycol intoxication, because oxalic acid is a metabolite of ethylene glycol, however, there have been few reports about the direct effect of oxalic acid. We herein report a case with acute renal failure lcaused by ingestion of oxalic acid during accidental drinking like normal drinking water. This study reports the case of a 48-year-old woman with oral oxalic acid poisoning
Methods:
Patient had history of accidental floor cleaner ingestion (oxalic acid),two days prior to hospitalization.Presented with shortness of breath since one day and oligo-anuric over 24 hours.urine output, serum creatinine trend was observed.number of dialysis requirement and time to recover was observed.
After hospitalization each day urine output ,serum creatinine and dialysis days are measured .how many days after patient attend diuretic phase and recovery was calculated.
Results:
Patient become anuric by 2 days, diuretic phase start at 3 wk and gain normal kidney function by 5 wk from date of oxalic acid poisoning
Conclusions:
In conclusion, Oxalic acid poisoning may result in acute renal impairment, which may result in mortality. Therefore, the safe and informed use of household cleaners should be encouraged, and household cleaning products containing Oxalic acid should include clear identification and warnings regarding the potential harm associated with Oxalic acid poisoning.
