Introduction:

Diabetes Mellitus and Hypertension are the most common causes of CKD. Proteinuria of any etiology leads to worsening of CKD. Municipal corporation of greater Mumbai has started a screening programme for Non Communicable diseases (NCD) like DM, HTN in asymptomatic individuals. In present study, such asymptomatic individuals were screened for urinary abnormalities by department of nephrology.

Methods:

Aim- To screen asymptomatic individuals visiting NCD corner for presence of urinary abnormalities. This was a cross sectional study, over a duration of 2 months. A total of 521 asymptomatic individuals were screened for presence of Diabetes, Hypertension and urinary abnormailities. H10 Dipsticks was used for urine analysis.

Results:

Out of total screened population (n= 521) – 69.1% were males, mean age was 47.2yrs. Of the diabetics, 50 (64.9%) had glycosuria (p <0.001). 45(8.6 %) had proteinuria of which 12(55.4%) had DM (p 0.026) and 8 (37%) had HTN (p= 0.371). 0.6% of individuals were found to have microscopic hematuria

Conclusions:

Asymptomatic glycosuria and proteinuria should raise the suspicion of underlying DM or Hypertension and should prompt screening for same. Present study reconfirms the role of doing urine analysis at the first presentation, as early diagnosis prevents morbidity, mortality and expenditure.
