Introduction:

Functional capacity is probably less than the values reported in literature for majority of CKD on maintenance hemodialysis patients. Not many studies in the past have objectively reported the functional capacity of patients on hemodialysis.

Methods:

Aim - To correlate functional capacity with physical activity level and Quality of life in adult patients with End Stage Renal disease on Hemodialysis

METHODOLOGY : We conducted a Observational Cross-sectional Pilot study including 30 patients with CKD on MHD patients as study population . Outcome Measures included 6-minute walk test to assess functional capacity, IPAQ Questionnaire (for physical activity level), KDQOL_SF Questionnaire (for Quality of Life) . Descriptive statistics of outcome measures were found. ·Spearman’s correlation test was used to find Correlation of functional capacity with physical activity level and Quality of life.

Results:

RESULTS- 30 CKDVD patients on haemodialysis were included , M:F was 21: 9 Mean age was 38.90 + 11.20 years . The mean distance covered by the patients in 6 minutes was 349.37 + 98.02m. The median physical activity level in these patients was 143.75 MET minutes/week. Quality of life, measured using the different components of KDQOL-SF, showed that the most affected component was Work status with the median 0%. Quality of Social interaction and Cognitive function ; 2 components of Quality of life ,were least affected in these patients, with the median value of 93.33%.

There was a weak positive correlation between distance walked in 6 minutes and IPAQ which is statistically insignificant. (rho=0.277, p=0.139, N=30)

Correlation of 6-minute walk distance and KDQOL-SF components showed that there was a significant positive correlation with : Social support (rho= 0.519, p=0.003, N=30), Overall health 64(rho= 0.517, p=0.003, N=30), General Health (rho= 0.507, p=0.004, N=30).

Distance covered in 6 minutes has statistically insignificant weak positive correlation with Effects of kidney disease, Cognitive function , Sleep , Dialysis staff encouragement , Role- Physical , Emotional Wellbeing , Energy/ Fatigue , SF-12 Physical Health composite , SF-12 Mental health composite.

Conclusions:

There is weak positive correlation of functional capacity & IPAQ, but statistically insignificant . Significant positive corelation of 6MWT and quality of life [ social support, overall health & general health ] was noted which was statistically significant.
