Introduction:

 Chronic kidney disease is defined as a reduced glomerular filtration rate, (GFR) <60 ml/min/1.73 m2, or increased urinary albumin excretion or both, for more than 3 months with implications for health. It is the 12th highest cause of death and 17th highest cause of disability worldwide. It has taken on the status of public health concern in recent years, due to its increased prevalence among the world’s population and its impact on morbidity and mortality in affected patients.

Methods:

Facility based retrospective cross-sectional study among selected chronic kidney disease patient on follow up at the hospital renal referral clinic for last five years.

Results:

Out of 520 CKD patients participated in the study, 318(61.2%) were males. Majority of the patients (34.2%) were between age group 41 and 60 years 69.2% patients were urban residents. A total of 48 (9%) patients had biopsy done. Lupus nephritis is the leading cause of CKD in these groups accounting for 44.60% the cases. In 472 (91%) patients CKD cause was identified based on clinical criteria tool. One hundred frothy nine (28.7%) patients had chronic glomerulonephritis. In one hundred seventeen (22.5%) patients, the cause was diabetic kidney disease. 69(13.3%) patents had hypertensive nephrosclerosis as underling cause of CKD.

Conclusions:

Age group between 41 and 60 years and urban dwellers were seen to be more venerable for chronic kidney disease. Chronic glomerulonephritis, diabetic kidney disease and hypertensive glomerulosclerosis were the leading cause of CKD in among the study patients.
