Introduction:

Epidemiology of renal pathologies has shown changing trends over time.Data from renal biopsy regitries can help in estimating the disease burden due to individual diseases and their distribution as per age and gender.

Methods:

This is a retrospective observational single centre study of the native kidney biopsies performed between March 2015 to March 2022 (n=1104) at Sir ganga Ram hospital, New Delhi, India.

Results:

Among 1104 patients who underwent native kidney biopsies, 30.5% presented as nephrotic syndrome,30.6% as nephritic syndrome and rapidly progressive renal failure was seen in 7.2% patients.Glomerular diseases were the most common finding followed by chronic interstitial nephritis.Among glomerular diseases,IgA Nephropathy was the most common finding, followed by membranous nephropathy and FSGS. Diabetic kidney disease was found in 5.9% of the biopsy samples. In patients above 18 years of age membranous nephropathy was the most common cause of nephrotic syndrome. Pauci immune glomerulonephritis was the most common cause of crescentic GN, followed by IgA nephropathy and lupus nephritis.Among patients with lupus nephritis, most common histological lesion was class IV followed by class V lupus nephritis.

Conclusions:

Among adults with nephrotic range proteinuria, membranous nephropathy is the most common finding in this region. As reported from other regions in India, IgA nephropathy is the most common cause of hematuria in our study as well.
