Introduction:

Professional stress is a worrying reality for healthcare workers. The working environment in nephrology and haemodialysis is restrictive, with an intense relationship between healthcare staff and patients. This situation has a psychological impact on workers. We wanted to study the burden of professional stress among nephrology and haemodialysis workers in the context of Sub-Saharan Africa marked by a lack of human and material resources in the nephrology and hemodialysis departments.

Methods:

Between 29 November 2023 and 29 January 2024 we conducted a cross-sectional study among nephrology and haemodialysis workers in six hospitals in Burkina Faso; the only hospitals in the country with nephrology and hemodialysis services. We assessed professional stress using the Karasek questionnaire. We used multiple logistic regression to identify the factors associated. The study was approved by the Health Research Ethics Committee (N° 2023-09-228).

Results:

A total of 108 workers took part in the study, representing a participation rate of 62.4%. The mean age was 39.5 ± 6.9 years. The sex ratio was 1.03. The prevalence of professional stress was 33.3%.  Job-strain was noted in 59.3% of the workers. Less than 30 minutes to get to the service (OR: 2,44 [1,02 - 5,81]; p:0,0437) and working in a haemodialysis unit (3,28 [1,35 - 7,98]; p: 0,0085) were associated with the occurrence of professional stress.

Conclusions:

Professional stress is a reality in nephrology and haemodialysis practice in Burkina Faso. Preventive measures need to be implemented.
