Introduction:

Hemodialysis is accompanied by  increased level of cytokines for example tumor necrosis factor-a (TNF-a) that caused by activation of antigen presenting cell derived cytokines. This cytokine associated with adequacy of hemodialysis that refer to how well toxin and waste products removed from the blood.

Methods:

This is a cross-sectional study conducted on May 2024 at Dialysis Unit of Sanjiwani Gianyar Hospital Bali. Tumor necrosis factor-a were measured by Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and adequacy of dialysis were measured by Dougirdas Kt/V method. The correlation of TNF-a and adequacy of hemodialysis were analyzed by spearman correlation test.

Results:

This study enrolled 61 subjects, consisted of 32 males and 29 females with a mean age of 54 years with the mean length of dialysis was 72 month. All of the subject were treated by two times a week of dialysis with polysulfone dialyzer. Comorbid of the subjects were diabetes mellitus and hypertension in 37.8 %. Based on the laboratory results, the mean of serum creatinine level was 8.88±3.52 mg/dL, the mean of TNF-a was 46.74 pg/ml and the mean adequacy of dialysis by Kt/V were 1.57 ± 0.31. Based on spearman correlation test we found that serum TNF-a were correlated with adequacy of dialysis with r=-0.257.

Conclusions:

This study showed that TNF-a were correlated with adequacy of hemodialysis by Kt/V.
