Introduction:
The incidence of HBV infection is said to be on the downward trend with the introduction of HBV vaccine, however this is not the case in low income countries like Nigeria where HBV infection is still endemic. This could be due to lack of awareness and unavailability of HBV vaccines, hence the need to assess the knowledge gap among ESKD who are at increased risk of HBV due to repeated blood transfusion.
The aim of the study is to
assess the prevalence of HBV infection, risk factors and HBV vaccination rate among ESKD patients
Methods:
Cross sectional study involving 50 ESKD patients whose data were acquired using an interviewer administered questionnaire. Data includes demographic data, knowledge about HBV and HBV vaccine and aetiology of CKD. Data was analyzed using Statistical Packages for Social Sciences (SPSS IBM) version 23.0. Categorical variables were presented using frequencies and percentages while numeric data was presented using mean and standard deviation
Results:
50 Patients were recruited. 33 (66%) were males and 17 (34%) females with a mean age of 52.74yr. 26 (52%) of the participants have tertiary level of education. 35 (70%) participants have heard about HBV while 15 (30%) claim not to have heard about HBV. Of the 35 participants that have heard about HBV, 25 (71%) of the participants heard about HBV from medical personnel while 6 (17%) participants heard from Media. The most common mode of transmission chosen by participants were blood transfusion (26) and unprotected sex (23)
6 (12%) out of the 50 participants were HbsAg positive(prevalence). Only 8 (16%) participants were fully vaccinated against HBV (vaccination rate).
There was a negative correlation (r= -0.37) between education by medical personnel and HbsAg positive status. There is also a negative correlation (r= -0.16) between vaccination and HbsAg positive status
Conclusions:
Awareness and health education by medical personnel and aggressive vaccination offers the best chance of reducing the prevalence of HBV infection among ESKD patients
