Introduction:
Living with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and having a good quality of life (QoL) indicates quality of care. We aim to assess the quality of life of stage 3-5 CKD patients not receiving dialysis.
Methods:
From 1st September to 15th December 2023, we selected patients with stage 3-5 CKD not receiving dialysis or a transplant and aged at least 18 years and administered the French version of the MOS SF-36 questionnaire. After recoding, the score for each dimension of quality of life was calculated by averaging the items assessing the dimension. We also collected socio-demographic, clinical and biological information on each patient. We obtained authorisation from the Director General of the University Hospital for this survey, and each patient was included based on informed consent.
Results:
A total of 385 patients were included (mean age: 53±16.4 years; males: 174; sex ratio: 0.8), 160 of whom had stage 5 CKD. The median duration of follow-up in nephrology was 17 months. The mean overall quality of life score was 44.4±22.6, and the physical and psychological components scores were 46.3±21.4 and 42.5±24.4, respectively. In the physical component, the « general perceived health » dimension had the lowest score (29.2±19.2), and in the psychological component, the lowest score was for the « limitation of social activities » dimension (34.6±21.2).
Conclusions:
Patients with stage 3-5 CKD had a low overall physical and psychological quality of life, as assessed by a generic questionnaire.
