Session Description:
In this session, we will explore the interconnectedness of environmental change and kidney health, focusing on the growing need for nephrology to adopt sustainable practices. As the climate crisis intensifies, nephrologists must consider how environmental factors such as pollution, water scarcity, and climate-induced health risks are impacting kidney disease prevalence and outcomes. This session will delve into strategies for developing a comprehensive roadmap for environmentally sustainable kidney care, including practical steps for making dialysis units more eco-friendly. We will also envision the future of kidney care over the next 25 years, emphasizing the role of future generations in driving innovative and sustainable solutions.
Learning Objectives:
- Gain insights into how environmental factors such as pollution, water scarcity, and climate change influence kidney disease incidence and patient outcomes.
- Learn to create a roadmap for environmentally sustainable practices within nephrology, including guidelines for reducing the environmental footprint of dialysis units.
- Identify practical steps to make dialysis units more environmentally friendly, focusing on energy and water conservation, waste reduction, and the use of sustainable materials.
- Explore potential advancements in kidney care over the next 25 years, with a focus on the contributions of future generations to sustainable and innovative nephrology practices.
- Foster collaboration between nephrologists, environmental scientists, policymakers, and patients to ensure the development and implementation of sustainable kidney care solutions.
